Como usar o HD interno como externo sem formatá-lo?

Estou com um HD de note modelo: (WD5000BPVT - 22HXZT3), ele estar em perfeito estado. Comprei um cabo SATA / IDE 2.0 na tentativa de torná-lo um HD externo, mas não queria perder alguns arquivos importantes que estão nele. Eu instalei devidamente o cabo sata/ide no HD e o conectei no pc, mas o meu pc não está reconhecendo-o. O usb fica ativo com o nome de ata/atapi, mas não aparece na unidade de disco. Alguém poderia me orientar se tem como salvar esses arquivos?
Detalhe: Neste HD está instalado o Windows 7 start. No no meu pc está instalado o Windows 8. Tentei acessá-lo com outro pc que tem instalado o W 7 e acontece a mesma coisa.
Eu tentei usar o recurso de “chkdsk” mas o sistema não permite, pois preciso informar ao ‘cmd’ o nome da unidade. Quando vou em gerenciamento de disco o dispositivo é detectado, porém com a informação “ Desconhecido, Não inicializado”.
