Gimhae City, Gyeongnam Province, opened its new main stadium, Gimhae Sports Complex, to the public on the 19th, about 20 days before the 105th National Sports Festival.
The main stadium, whose construction began in November 2019 at a cost of 184.4 billion won, was completed in its entirety at the end of June.
The stadium has three floors above ground and five floors underground, a total floor area of 68,370㎡, and can accommodate 15,066 seats. The separate parking lot surrounding the stadium can accommodate a total of 1,779 cars at once from the first basement level to the second basement level.
The first floor above ground has a sports track and a natural grass field, and the second and third floors above ground are for the audience seats. The audience seats are equipped with a torch stand shaped like the 'two fish' (Geum-i-ya and Ok-i-ya) that are part of the Gaya legend, as well as the brightest and clearest high-definition HD screen in the country.
The most eye-catching auxiliary facility in the stadium is the 'Gimhae City Kim Young-won Art Museum', which has an entrance at the front of the stadium.
This art museum is named after Kim Young-won, a representative sculptor of Korea, the sculptor of King Sejong at Gwanghwamun, and a graduate of Gimhae Haneul Middle and High School.
The art museum is designed as a four-story space with a total floor area of 5,590 m2.
Special exhibitions will also be held at the art museum that will be temporarily opened to coincide with the festival.
The special exhibition will also display the original frame of the statue of King Sejong created by artist Kim. The site of the collapse of a retaining wall that occurred on a portion of the sports field ring road on June 1st was safely restored using a new method and a safety inspection was completed.
This year's Games are drawing attention as 40 of the 46 Paris Olympic medalists are participating.
Gimhae Mayor Hong Tae-yong said, "Most of the Paris Olympic medalists will once again compete in Gimhae, so we expect the National Sports Festival to be more successful in a wider range of events than any other National Sports Festival in history."
Mayor Hong said, "We will make sure that the Games will be safe and fun, starting with the opening ceremony in Gimhae," and "We will make sure that the newly built main stadium will be loved as a multi-cultural space where people can enjoy both sports and art even after the Games."
The 105th National Sports Festival will be held in Gyeongnam from October 11th to 17th, and the 44th National Disabled Sports Festival will be held from October 25th to 30th.
All 18 cities and counties in Gyeongnam Province, centered around Gimhae City, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events, will participate.
Under the slogan, “Republic of Korea Running Again with Gyeongnam,” approximately 30,000 athletes and officials from 17 cities and provinces in high school, college, and general divisions will compete in 49 events.
